What is a Convention Planner ?

Convention planners are professionals who, based on their specialized knowledge of international conferences, exhibitions, and expositions, plan and execute domestic and international conferences, events, and cultural events of all sizes. Convention planners coordinate and manage the entire process of hosting, planning, preparing, and conducting international conferences hosted by various organizations and associations, including governments, corporations, and research institutes. They also establish conference objectives, manage budgets, and perform all necessary duties throughout the entire process, from organizing to uating conventions, including registration planning, contracts, negotiations, on-site management, and conference uation.

Overview of Convention Planner Certification

This nationally recognized certification, established in 2003, aims to cultivate professionals who will lead the rapidly growing convention industry in the 21st century. It aims to establish a foundation for fostering the high-value-added convention industry, attracting various large-scale international conferences to Korea by securing convention experts, and revitalizing the industry. The organization administering the certification is the Human Resources Development Service of Korea (http://www.hrdkorea.or.kr/)

The Convention Planner Certification is divided into two levels: Level 1 and Level 2, based on the applicant's experience. Level 2 certification can be obtained through a course uation process in addition to a certification exam. However, Level 1 certification is administered solely through a certification exam.

Convention Planner Level 2 Course uation Qualification System

  • 1The process-based qualification system grants national technical qualifications to individuals who have faithfully completed education and training courses that meet certain requirements based on the National Competency Standards (NCS) and who meet certain passing criteria through internal and external uations. Introduced in 2016, it is currently applied to the Level 2 Convention Planner Certification.
  • 2Therefore, the certification process for the Level 2 Convention Planner Certification operates in parallel with the existing certification process.

  • Convention Planner Level 2 : 3 times a year

  • Ability to handle all aspects of convention hosting, planning, and managements.
  • Foreign language proficiency and management, negotiation, and marketing skills.
  • Ability to perform basic tasks related to convention planning and management.
  • Ability to assist with the work of convention planner level 1.
Eligibility Requirements
  • Those who have obtained a Level 2 Convention Planner qualification and have worked in the field for at least three years.
  • Those who have worked in the field for at least four years.
  • Those who have obtained a qualification equivalent to the same qualification in a foreign country.

  • Entrepreneurship : Individuals can pursue careers as event planners, conference planners, or international conference planners.
  • Employment : Individuals can find employment in event planning departments within various organizations or associations, including the National Assembly, the government department, local governments, political parties, corporations, research institutes, and social groups.
  • Preferential Treatment : Under the National Technical Qualifications Act, individuals may receive preferential treatment in hiring at public institutions and private companies, as well as in compensation, promotions, transfers, and job security.
